Cast Mycelium Artworks
Titanic Reliquary is the title of the installation that I began in 2019. My original impulse was to develop a method for casting mycelium into painting supports in order to replace the lumber that I commonly used in my stretcher bars and encaustic works, but through a process of experimentation with the material, its peculiarities and aesthetic manifestations as a living organism began to take on greater meaning in a metaphorical sense.

The title Titanic Reliquary alludes to what’s in store for humans as a species if we continue on our current trajectory towards deforestation, as well as the appearance of the objects themselves, which can be anything from a velvety smooth, detailed surface, to something resembling artifacts from a sunken ship.
The artworks in this series are made from Cast Mycelium and Hemp Straw. Some are finished with Beeswax, and Gold Leaf.
Cast mycelium is the world's most sustainable material, and is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional materials in fine art, architecture, furniture design, and textiles.
The artworks in this series scale from 5x3.25 inches, to 27x17 inches.
